Leaving the Port of Piraeus on our way to Santorini

Chris and I flew to Athens then took an hour train ride to the Port of Piraeus from the airport to find our hotel.  We arrived about 4 hours before Tina and Ken giving as time to find our hotel, visit a Greek Orthodox Church and have lunch.  Finding the hotel was somewhat of an adventure as we don't read Greek and most of the streets did not seem to have any signs whatsoever.  We had to stop and ask directions 3 times to find our hotel even though it was located very close to the port.

We decided to stay the first night in Piraeus as we had an early morning ferry the next day to Santorini and it made it very easy to simply walk to our boat in the morning.  When we returned from the islands, we stayed in the Athens city center for 2 nights to play tourist.

Unfortunately the day we were leaving there were no high-speed ferries to Santorini so we had to take a slow one.  The journey took about 8 hours but the time seemed to go by quickly as we relaxed and played cards most of the way.

Lunch: This was our first Greek meal.  We found a little shop at the Piraeus port and ordered Greek Beer, Gyro's and Baklava.  Maybe it was the excitement of finally arriving in Greece and having our first meal, but this was one of the best Gyro's we had on the trip, and we had several.

The Greek beer we ran across most often was "Mythos".

Holy Trinity Church: This church is located across the street from the port.  This is a Greek Orthodox Church with a beautifully decorated interior.  They are quite strict on dress when entering a church.  You must be wearing long pants as well as have your shoulders covered.

Train Station: We met Tina and Ken at the Piraeus train station.

Ouzo: Our first time to try Ouzo.  It's strong and has a very strong liquorish taste to it.  None of us really cared for it, but by the end of the trip I think we developed a slight taste for it.  Many restaurants would bring you a free shot of ouzo after your meal at lunch or dinner, so we had the opportunity to sample it several times.
