| On this trip we drove to Bodiam Castle, then on to the town of Hastings. The seaside town of Hastings is about a 1.5 hour drive from Windsor. So we are actually only 1.5 hours from the beach! Although this beach has no sand, only pebbles. There are many castles in this area South-South East of London. We will plan other future trips to this area. | ||

| Bodiam Castle: A fairytale medieval castle, one of the most famous in Britain. Rising from the moat which is filled with huge carp. Built in anticipation of a French Invasion in 1385 which never happened. Due to the castle being in fine condition you can see superb examples of old English architecture with rounded corner towers, battlements, portcullis and extensive moat. | ||

| Battle Abbey: The Battle of Hastings, Battlefield and Abbey. The Abbey was built by William the Conqueror to atone for the blood his army shed on October 14th, 1066. | ||

| Hastings Castle: The original wooden castle was erected in 1066 straight after the invasion on top of the cliff that now overlooks Hastings Old Town. It was rebuilt in stone in 1070 as the first permanent Norman castle in the country. The southern half of the castle, including the keep, has fallen into the sea, but the foundations of the 11th church and some of the 12th & 13th century stonework remains. | ||
