Chris has been cycling with some of her friends she has met in Windsor, Cynthia and Jackie. They ride Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. There rides are usually a few hours long and cover anywhere from 8-16 miles.

Cycling around the countryside

Household Cavalry: The photo was taken while cycling through the Windsor Great Park, it shows the Household Cavalry practicing on the Long Walk.

Houses along the Thames: These are large houses located in different towns by the Thames river and countryside.

The Pound Lock: Basically a pound lock is a man-made chamber with heavy gates at either end. There are sluices within these huge gates, which can be opened and closed, to control the flow of water into and out of the chamber.

The system of locks throughout the length of the river are interesting to visit. Locks are in effect 'steps' in the river as it flows to the sea. With lock gates at each end, boats traveling upstream, for example, would enter the lock when it is 'empty' (i.e. at the level of the lower reach). When the gates are closed the lock is filled by the pressure of water from upstream. Once the lock is filled the upper gates are opened and the boats proceed. At this point vessels traveling down stream can now enter the lock and be lowered to the next reach.

Thames River Locks: On some of the rides, the trails pass by Locks on the Thames river. These photos show the working of the Lock and a boat passing through.
