Trafalgar Square

On this excursion to London, we met our neighbor Sue and her partner Justin at the British Museum to see the Terracotta Warrior exhibition from Xian China and we also visited some other sites around London.

British Museum - Terracotta Warriors of Xian: The British Museum had a special exhibition of the Terracotta Warriors from Xian China.  There were only about 20 statues of the 7000 from China but they were amazing to see.  They did not allow photos, so we only have pictures from outside the museum.

There is also a photo of me enjoying a hotdog.

Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shi Huang the First Emperor of China. The terra cotta figures, dating from 210 BCE, were discovered in 1974 by several local farmers near Xian, Shaanxi province, China near the the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor. The figures vary in height ( 6ft–6ft 5in), according to their role, the tallest being the Generals. The figures include warriors, chariots, horses, officials, acrobats, strongmen, and musicians. Current estimates are that in the three pits containing the Terracotta Army there were about 7,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, the majority still buried in the pits.

The Terracotta Army was buried with the Emperor of Qin (Qin Shi Huangdi) in 209-210 BC (his reign over Qin was from 247 BC to 221 BC and unified China from 221 BC to the end of his life in 210 BC). Their purpose was to help rule another empire with Shi Huangdi in the afterlife.

Crypt Tea Room: The tea room is located in the crypt of St. Martin-in-the-Fields an is in the northeastern corner of Trafalgar Square. There has been a church on this sight since the 13th century; the present building was completed in 1726. Its magnificent Corinthian portico has been much copied in the US where it became a model for the Colonial style of church building.

St. Martin-in-the-Fields is the official parish church for Buckingham Palace. Inside, there is a royal box on the left of the alter and one for the admiralty on the right.
