We flew from Gatwick Airport to Olbia on the Island of Sardinia in Italy.  If you are not sure exactly where Sardinia is, click here. The great thing about this tropical trip is that it is only a 2 hour flight from Gatwick.  When we arrived, it felt like we were in Hawaii, but with only a couple hour flight and a 1 hour time difference.

The temperature was close to 85F with perfect blue skies.  The Mediterranean Sea was beautiful and the water temperature was perfect for swimming.  With the exception of one day that was a little windy, we had great weather the entire time.  The morning we woke up to go to the airport, it was cloudy and cooler, so we could not have planned it better.

We stayed at the Hotel Gabbiano Azzurro: www.hotelgabbianoazzurro.com

Our hotel room overlooked part of Golfo Aranci and Eddie could listen to the surf on the beach.  We slept with the windows open all night and were about 50 feet from the water.

October is off-peak season so most everything is closed or will soon be closing for the Winter.  Most shops, restaurants and hotels were already closed.  This trip was simply to relax at the pool and beach, so it was not a problem for us.  We would like to return in the future and visit more beaches up north on the Emerald Coast.

Private Beach: The hotel had a small private beach area.  Lounge chairs and umbrellas were free to guests.  Chris and I were the youngest couple on the beach.  Most everyone was at least in their 60's it seemed and Eddie was the only one who was NOT wearing a Speedo.  The beach was also a topless beach, so that was interesting considering the age group.

Golfo Aranci: These are views from the balcony of our hotel room.  One photo shows how far you could walk out into the water while the other one shows the surf on the day it was windy.

Golfo Aranci Mountain and Clouds: These are about the only clouds we saw other than the day we were leaving.  There is a large mountain at one end of the bay and it always seems to be covered in clouds.

Squid: We had seafood at every meal but breakfast.

At one meal, we were eating mussels.  A man at the table next to us came over and said we were eating them strangely.  (we were spearing the mussel with our fork and dipping them in the sauce as we always have)  He said that mussels were finger food and and should be slurped off the shell.  Basically you take a shell in one hand and use it to scoop out a mussel in another shell, then dip the shell with the mussel in it into the sauce and slurp it out.  By doing this, they taste much better as you are eating them with the sauce.

Never to old to learn something new :)  Now we have to go back to Belgium and eat them correctly.
