Turville

Our neighbor Sue and her partner Justin invited us to lunch and dinner in the town of  Sydenham.  Justin lives in a Thatched Cottage that was built in the 1600's.  It was very interesting touring the town, his home and listening to all the history.  He even has a stove/oven that was built in the 1850's.  It is placed in the large fireplace area and he still uses it for cooking meals.

Close to Sydenham is the town of Turville where they filmed the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.  The windmill is where Caractacus Potts (Dick Van Dyke) lived.

We also drive to Christmas Common, a small town that has of course, a large Christmas shop.

The last photo is of our Doctor's Office or Surgery as they say here.

Armistice Day (12 November 2006)

November is the time of the year when red poppies are worn in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for us during wars.  The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the signing of the Armistice, on 11th November 1918, to signal the end of World War One.  At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare.

Remembrance Day is on 11 November.  It is a special day set aside to remember all those men and women who were killed during the two World Wars and other conflicts.  At one time the day was known as Armistice Day and was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second World War.

Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is usually the Sunday nearest to 11 November.  Special services are held at war memorials and churches all over Britain .  A national Ceremony takes place at the cenotaph in Whitehall , London .  Cenotaph is translated from Greek to mean ‘Empty Tomb’.

Remembrance day (Australia, Canada, United Kingdom), also known as Poppy Day (South Africa and Malta), and Armistice Day (United Kingdom, New Zealand and many other Commonwealth countries; and the original name of the holiday internationally) is a day to commemorate the sacrifice of veterans and civilians in World War I, World War II, and other wars. It is observed on November 11 to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. The observance is specifically dedicated to members of the armed forces who were killed during war, and was created by King George V of the United Kingdom on November 7, 1919

The Poppies

The poppy's significance to Remembrance Day is a result of Canadian military physician John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields. The poppy emblem was chosen because of the poppies that bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their red colour an appropriate symbol for the bloodshed of trench warfare. A Frenchwoman by the name of Madame E. Guérin introduced the widely used artificial poppies given out today. Some people choose to wear white poppies, which emphasises a desire for peaceful alternatives to military action.

These photos are from the Armistice Parade that took place on the street next to our home.  The military marched into Trinity Church, located about 100 meters from our flat for the service.

Turville: Turville is a small town where they filmed some of the scenes in the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.  The village has also been used in other movies and TV shows such as 'Little Britain'.  We hiked about 10 minutes to get to the top of the ridge overlooking the town.  Sue had made us a nice lunch and we had beautiful weather to sit on the hillside and enjoy the view.

The group photo shows Chris and I with our neighbor Sue and her partner Justin.

The last photo is a view of Turville from the top of the ridge.

Our Surgery: This is the building where our Doctor's office is located.  In England you would say that you have to go to surgery, meaning you have a normal doctors appointment.  Our Doctor or Surgery is located about a 5 minute walk from our flat.
